Madonna dedicates Like a Virgin to the Pope

Madonna tranquil knows how to stir up arguing. The 50-year-old singer sent Italy into a flap this weekend, dedicating a performance of Like a Virgin to the Pope.

She was in Rome as part of her Sticky & Sweet tour, performing to a crowd of 60,000 on Saturday night. "I dedicate this song to the Pope, because I'm a child of God," she said. "All of you are also children of God."

The Stadio Olimpico crowd went bonkers at the promulgation, cheering loud enough that Pope Benedict at the Vatican just a few kilometres away - might level have heard.

Corriere della Sera, Italy's bestselling newspaper, called the dedication a "provocation" only the latest incident in a long, tempestuous relationship betwixt Madonna Ciccone and the Catholic church. Though she was raised in a devout Italian-American Catholic family, Madonna has frequently provoked the attention and ire of the Vatican.

Her 1989 video for Like a Prayer was condemned by Catholic authorities for its burning crosses, stigmata-afflicted statues and, er, Madonna's seduction of a black Jesus. They weren't fans of 1990's Blonde Ambition tour either, calling it one of the to the highest degree "satanic shows in the history of humanity". This didn't seem to shade the Material Girl however in 2006 she staged a mock-crucifixion on a Roman stage. And the Vatican accused her of blasphemy.

No word whether Pope Benedict XVI was chuffed by the inscription. Our infer is ... non.

Being a offbeat coed nine-piece from Reykjavik, Iceland, Gus Gus was around bound to inspire comparisons to the Sugarcubes, though the onset of ten long time caused the grouping to inherit the influences of electronic blur and trip-hop rhythms instead than the tear of post-punk insaneness that godlike the Sugarcubes during the late '80s. Begun as a flick theatre headache in early 1995 by filmmakers Stefán Árni and Siggi Kjartansson, the radical was gradually expanded to include musicians such as DJ Herb Legowitz and programmer Biggi Thórarinsson as well as singer/songwriters Daníel Ágúst, Hafdís Huld, and Magnús Jónsson (former actors all), a cameraman (Steph), and a producer (Baldur Stefánsson). The band's unquestionably indie sensibilities light-emitting junction rectifier to their signing by 4AD after a four-part series of terpsichore shuffle in EPs during 1996. Among a handful of groups in the late '90s with access to both tight knit dance circles as well as the notoriously highly strung indie community, the group gained documentation from LFO (with Mark Bell's remix of "Believe") and i of London's about notable DJ stores, Fat Cat Records, spell playacting their first twenty-four hours of the month in England. Given a combined U.S./U.K. deprivation due to 4AD's agreement with Warner Bros., their debut album, Polydistortion, slay the stores in April 1997. This Is Normal followed in 1999, and one year by and by the anthology outlet Gus Gus vs. T-World appeared. 2002 power power saw the handout of Care; Motley Live appeared a year later. The group returned with new material in 2007 with Forever and a day.

Court now orders Spears psych exam

A judge has ruled that troubled pop star Britney Spears must be examined by a court-appointed psychiatrist to determine if she understands the legal proceedings involving her.
Reuters reports that Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon ordered on Monday that the psychiatrist file a report on the 26-year-old's mental condition by 13 February.
On 14 February it will be decided how much longer Spears' assets should remain under the temporary control of her father and his attorney.
Commissioner Gordon also said that a restraining order against Spears' self-styled manager and confidant, Sam Lutfi, forbids him from any form of contact with her.
Spears was taken to the UCLA Medical Center for a 72-hour psychiatric evaluation last week; her stay has now been extended to two weeks.

Hailing from rainy Seattle, Aiden combines post-hardcore and tough attitudes with medieval esthetics and a sexual love of all things horror (not to honorable mention, of course, the Misfits) to create billowy, darkly melodic medicine. The grouping formed in the leaping of 2003 spell its members were soundless in high gear schooling, pickings their name from the young, ghost-seeing boy in the 2002 revulsion flick The Ring. A few lineup changes occurred early on; the quintuplet -- Nick Wiggins (freshwater bass), Jake Davison (drums), Angel Ibarra (guitar), Jake Wambold (guitar), and William "wiL" Francis (vocals) -- was coagulated, however, ahead entering the studio in December 2004 to record their debut uncut, Our Gang's Dark Oath. Making two-song samplers of their album, Aiden managed to evanesce out a few one thousand copies around township, sparking a grapevine buzz all over Seattle. Their debut was released in June 2004 on Dead Teenager, and the band played unnumberable shows throughout the year -- whenever school would countenance. Their laborious work paid cancelled quickly, inking a deal with Victory Records by December. All members were finally done with high shoal by June 2005, and Aiden was exempt to go, jumping on the road that summer with the Hurt Process, the Audition, and the Junior Varsity. Their first label exertion, Nightmare Anatomy, appeared in October 2005, proving to be a glibly energetic disk with undeniable meat hooks scorn passably sour lyric content. Touring with pronounce match Hawthorne Heights, Bayside, and Silverstein rounded out the year ahead Aiden headed back out to support 30 Seconds to Mars countrywide in the number 1 half of 2006. Victory then re-released Our Gang's Dark Oath with new artwork in April 2006, the Rain in Hell EP arriving hardly in time for that year's Halloween. In August of 2007, the band issued Conviction, an album that took them away from their screamo tendencies towards more rock-oriented, melodic terrain.
